I am Environmental Engineer by profession and live in the city of Loja, south eastern Ecuador. The Higher Technological Institute Loja, of which I am currently the Vice Headmaster, is a higher education institute dedicated to the integral training of technologists with high technical and humanistic preparation. Our graduates are enabled to actively integrate into the development of our region’s productive matrix.
In 2017, we joined the Loja Coffee Roundtable, where we participated in the Tourism and Consumption group. We concluded that the Loja Province is recognised for producing high quality coffee, but traditional ways of consumption do not guarantee a cup of quality coffee.
With the support of Swisscontact, our institute started to train teachers in the formation of barista instructors, and later structured a barista training course that consists of three levels. Swisscontact helped to equip our barista laboratory, and thanks to the financial support from the provincial government and the Loja Bank, the proposed infrastructure goals have been achieved. We also count on sponsorship by cafeterias, coffee traders and barista equipment providers, which allows us to offer the barista courses to a wider public. In 2018, our institute – through the continuous training programme – offered the barista training courses to citizens. 52 people have been trained as baristas and have already started to offer different preparations of a cup of high-quality Loja coffee.
Our goals are related to offering the certification of competences for the baristas. We would like to contribute that the Loja Province is pioneer of a culture of quality coffee consumption, and that Loja offers unique sensorial experiences after a cup of coffee.
