I am the president of the Cocoa Farmer Cooperative El Paraíso. My cooperative has had several problems with the infrastructure needed to carry out the appropriate post-harvest treatment of cocoa beans. We did not have canopies nor fermentation boxes, so we could not carry out good quality processes. Thanks to the link with Swisscontact, we have been able to get the necessary financing to acquire associative infrastructure; we have also been able to link up with public entities such as the Provincial Government of El Oro, where we have received support for the agricultural activity of the small producers that are part of our organisation.
With our organisation’s improvements in infrastructure and the better technical knowledge in post-harvest processes, I believe that – in the short term – the quality of our cocoa production will improve significantly. This will lead to the generation of higher incomes for the producers who are part of the "El Paraíso" Association, following the sustainability principles that Swisscontact has taught us since the beginning of our collaboration.
I would like to express my gratitude to Swisscontact, for the great support that they have given to my association. We are especially grateful for Swisscontact’s efforts towards improving the well-being of small farmers, as they are often forgotten at the country’s policy level.
