The dirt road went on for miles, our bus trailed by a cloud of red dust. After an hour, we arrived at the provincial town, where I had attended a tailoring course. One of my teachers of the Women’s Development Centre joined me to Phnom Penh, another five hours’ drive, to help me buy a second-hand sewing machine for my new business.
Two months ago, I started my own shop in my village. I have made and sold 20 pieces, mostly shirts and trousers. I think that this is a great success. This is possible thanks to the training, the 100 dollars’ worth of fabric as a contribution from Swisscontact and the strong support from my family. Although we are poor, my parents helped me to buy the equipment, a generator and a small wooden shop.
I am proud of what I have achieved. I don’t have the skills to make elaborate dresses yet. I hope that in the future, there will also be tailoring courses on higher levels.
