I am principal of the Integrated Polytechnic Regional Centre (IPRC) in Karongi, Rwanda. Six years ago, we faced the challenge of insufficient schools in the Western Province. Swisscontact stepped in through the Promoting Market-Oriented Skills Training and Employment Creation in the Great Lakes Region (PROMOST) Project it is implementing. Together we built six TVET schools in six different districts. These schools created and continue to create considerable opportunities for the youth in the area who acquire technical skills that enable some to find employment and others to create their own jobs. Swisscontact facilitated IPRC’s linkage with HES-SO Valais-Wallis, a Swiss Technical Institution. Collectively, we established joint projects such as Solar Water Heater, Micro Hydropower Plant and the Kivu Lake Experience. These generate incomes and help our trainers and trainees develop practical skills. With the outcome of this project, I see a bright future for our community, especially for the youth.
