Back in 2001, I started working in the El Alto Municipality as Head of the Municipal Laboratory, when there was still no Air Quality Network. The challenge was huge for me and for the municipality, as there was no local experience nor knowledge in the implementation and operation of an Air Quality Monitoring Network. Thanks to Swisscontact, we succeeded in building experiences and capacities for the benefit of the population of our fast-growing city. The support received from Swisscontact consisted of training technical personnel and equipment, visits to similar projects for the exchange of experiences and other complementary activities at different levels: personnel, institutions, the population itself in El Alto and other networks, technical equipment for the active, passive and automatic network and equipment for laboratories, materials, chemical substances and other accessories. The results of the implementation and operation of the Air Quality Monitoring Network in El Alto were the basis of my thesis to graduate in Industrial Chemistry at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz, Bolivia. Thanks to Swisscontact, I became a recognised professional in environmental topics. I have kept my commitment to the defence and conservation of the environment – air, water and soil – and am building up a green business, by recycling waste cooking oil into artisanal soaps.
