I am running a shop for agricultural machinery in Preah Vihear, a small provincial town in northern Cambodia. We are selling and repairing tractors from Japan to farmers all over the province.
My biggest challenge in the past was to find skilled staff. This changed when Swisscontact started a skills development programme for disadvantaged young men and women in cooperation with a local training centre. They asked whether I could train some of their participants. At first, I was sceptical, but it turned out to be a win-win situation. I get some extra hands to cope with the increasing workload and the participants get a practical learning experience.
Since then, I have not only hosted trainees but also employed some graduates of the ‘‘small engine repair’’ course. They have basic skills in line with my needs, are eager to learn and work hard. Currently, I am looking to employ some staff with accounting and management skills. It would be great if the project could train learners in these skills too.
